Barry M 154 Pale Nude Lip Paint

Swatches (L-to-R): Barry M Pale Nude, NYX Circe, Revlon Soft Nude

Nude lips aren't usually a statement in and of themselves but there are so many women who cannot live without a good nude lipstick.Well, finding the right shade of nude can sometimes be tricky, and you will need to experiment to see which undertone suits you the best.

Barry M 154 Pale Nude has a peachy-pink base and is milkier-looking than either NYX Circe or Revlon Soft Nude. The texture is like a MAC Satin; not quite creamy, but also not matte. It's thick and quite opaque on the lips, which is perfect if you need a real "concealer lips" look.

Lip Swatch: Barry M 154 Pale Nude Lip Paint on NC25 skin

However, a lipstick this pale is not easy to wear. If you're NW25/NC30 or darker, it WILL be paler than your skin. I also think it looks better on pinker skins, as the peach-pink tones can make an NC girl look a bit sallow (unless they are NC20 or paler).

Barry M 154 Pale Nude
I don't wear this on its own as it's a touch too pale for my skin tone. I usually layer it with something else, like a gloss or a baby pink lipstick such as Lime Crime Great Pink Planet.

Rock Romance: Soft winged pink eye and rose-petal lips

I got a request to do a sort of "rock"-inspired look that was a bit more delicate and pretty, using pink on the lips, as well as one regarding how to do winged/flared shadow, so I thought I'd combine these into one tutorial!

The main products you will need:
  1. A very black glossy kajal or pencil. If you're in the EU and can get hold of Essence products, I highly recommend the "I <3 Rock" Gloss Eye pencil. It comes in only one shade that I know of - the most perfect, lustrous jet black.
  2. A deep magenta pink shadow. I just used the 88 Matte palette that you can get from either Coastal Scents, BH Cosmetics or Sedona Lace.
  3. An opal pink iridescent shadow. MAC Pink Opal pigment, or The Body Shop Eye Shimmer #04 are the 2 I know of. They are an ivory/white but go on as a soft pink shimmer.
  4. Soft pink blush. I used Essence Blush Souffle in 01 Prima Ballerina. (I love this. It's like a mousse version of MAC's Well Dressed, at about 1/6 the price.)
  5. Pale peachy-pink lipstick. If you have medium to slightly deeper skin tones, try Barry M Peachy Pink or MAC Creme Cup. If you're very dark-skinned, try a sheerer finish or a gloss instead. You don't want to overpower the eyes with a very loud, pale mouth. If you are pale to fair, read on for what I mixed to get the perfect petal pout!

More Barry M Lip Paints!

Barry M Lip Paints (L-to-R: 154 Pale Nude, 153 Pink Ribbon, and 145 Punky Pink)

My obsession with trying out more Barry M Lip Paints continues. (And aren't they gorgeous?!!)
I must say ordering online from Barry M is always a bit of a gamble, as you have no idea if what you see is what you'll get. It took lots of Googling to get a better idea of what each shade looked like. This time round, I picked out 3 shades when I placed an order for my Fuchsia Lip Pencils, and they are:

(Swatches L-to-R): Barry M Lip Paints in 145 Punky Pink, 153 Pink Ribbon, and 154 Pale Nude

154 Pale Nude (creme) - "Concealer-lips" nude with a slight peach base. Quite opaque, with a lot of white in the base so it may not be the easiest shade to wear unless you really like that sort of look.

153 Pink Ribbon (creme) - Bright peach/coral-pink; VERY similar to MAC Chatterbox and NYX Fig. Perfect bright pink for those who are looking for a warmer, more coral alternative to shades like Pink Nouveau.

145 Punky Pink (creme) - Rich, deep cyclamen-pink. Listed on dupe sites as a 100% match for MAC Girl About Town. This goes on a softer shade than it looks in the tube, so don't be scared by the color. It's not TOO magenta or blue-based, so it would be flattering on most people.

Each Barry M Lip Paint is £4.49.
As always, I'll be following up soon with more detailed posts on each of the 3 shades, swatched alongside other similar colors!

Meet the Purrr-fect Barbie Pink Lip Pencil

My beloved MAC Pink Nouveau stub.
You guys know I love my hot pinks and bright pinks. But just awhile back, it suddenly hit me that I couldn't find a good strong, bright medium pink liner to match these lipsticks.

Most pink lip liners on the market are either too pale, too nude, too beige, too red, too coral, or too deep.

MAC Pink Nouveau swatched beside liners (R-to-L): NYX Dolly Pink (pale blue-pink), Rimmel 018 Addiction (nude-pink),  Rimmel 005 Pure (coral), NYX Fuchsia (blue-based magenta), MAC Chromagraphic in Process Magenta (true fuchsia)
To illustrate it, I lined up the pink pencils I own and swatched them all beside Pink Nouveau. No go.

After searching high and low through high- and low-end brands, I was amazed that all these companies (MAC, Make Up Store, NYX, etc,) with huge color ranges didn't cater for this particular color tone when it was so popular.

And then I found it.

Barry M has a lip pencil called #12 Fuchsia, which I had dismissed time and time again because the color representation online was totally inaccurate, and because I associate the word "Fuchsia" with a much deeper pink.

Shown here: Barry M #12 Fuchsia Lip Pencil (and China Glaze Sea Spray Nail Polish)
Now let me tell you, this is not a perfect match. But it is the closest to perfect that I have EVER found.
Lip match: MAC Pink Nouveau lipstick swatched with Barry M #12 Fuchsia Lip Pencil

If you own Pink Nouveau, you will know it's a bright pink, but it's not quite neon. The real perfect matches with Barry M #12 Fuchsia Lip Pencil are the more fluorescent pinks such as Lime Crime Countessa Fluorescent and Barry M 62 Vibrant Pink. If you're wearing it with a slightly softer shade like Pink Nouveau or Dolly Pink, make sure to fill in your lips rather than just outlining them, as you don't want it to catch the light when a camera flashes and give you a neon ring around your mouth (tried and tested by yours truly).

Texture wise, it's smooth and pigmented to apply, and when you color in your lip with it, the color is not streaky or clumpy. It's also vegan-friendly, and costs a very fabulous £2.99. I totally stocked up on it.

The Weekend Face: Barry M 146 Dolly Pink Lip Paint

If you've ever wondered about the fate of that gorgeous tube of bright, candy pink lipstick, you'll be glad to know it's been well-loved. It's no longer summer, but I still can't help whipping it out from time to time. There's nothing like a standout lipstick for looking "done" without spending a whole lot of time on your face.

The Glory of Royal Raspberry Lip Paint from Barry M: Lip swatch and review!

I got a surge of comments regarding Barry M Royal Raspberry Lip Paint after posting the below haul picture on my Tumblr.
Barry M Lip Paints (from left): Royal Raspberry, Vintage Rose and Dolly Pink

It's not a surprise considering it's an absolutely gorgeous black-cherry metallic.

I'm happy to report that after giving it a couple of goes, I can safely say Royal Raspberry is undoubtedly glorious. Creamier and silkier than the other Barry M Lip Paints I own (which tend to be sticky or more matte due to the high pigment density), this slips on to an effortless opaque finish, and does not bleed. If you find Barry M's semi-matte lipsticks too dry, this is a great finish for you, but it will not stay on quite as well as the more matte and tacky ones.
Barry M Royal Raspberry Lip Paint, close up.
Royal Raspberry comes at the commoners' price of £4.49 and shipping was extremely fast (I got my package within a week of ordering) despite it traveling 1/3 of the way across the globe from the UK to Asia. I'm happy to report that nothing was melted, broken, or smooshed against the sides in this second purchase either.

Shade-wise, metallic reds aren't exactly rare, and many brands from drugstore to high-end do carry a variation or two. But this shade is a hair deeper and cooler toned (which I believe makes it more flattering) than shades I've tried from L'oreal and PUPA. Unfortunately, I tried to swatch it on my hand, but the flat surface just makes it almost impossible to bring out the metallic tones and the contrast of light and dark properly.
Swatches don't do this lipstick justice! L-to-R: PUPA lipstick in New Chic (metallic), Barry M Royal Raspberry (metallic), and Bourjois Sweet Kiss 54 Rouge Glamour (creme)

For that, you need contours, so here is a close-up lip swatch for the full effect.
Lip swatch: Barry M Royal Raspberry up close and personal
The overall effect this black-cherry metallic shade gives is more vamp than sex-pot, and perfect if you like to channel the "quietly-mysterious icon" more than the "loud and fabulous starlet".

Tips:
Barry M Lip Paint in Royal Raspberry, worn with a sheer silvery-grey wash on the lids

  • In the look above, I wanted to adapt the traditional sex-pot look (black kitten liner, white pencil on the waterline), since the lipstick is a dark metallic cherry rather than a glossy red. I simply smoked out black kitten-flick liner by running over it with a soft grey wash so it becomes less obvious, and retained the pale waterline by running a matte pale-yellow pencil along it.
  • I do not wear this with lip liner, because I feel that would weight down the whole texture and make it very thick-looking and less metallic. I just rub a bit of lip concealer into the edges of my lips and then carefully apply the lipstick straight from the tube, for maximum intensity.
  • Deep metallic lipsticks are great when worn sheer as a stain. Apply balm or whatever nude/muted lip color on your lips, and then rub this right in the center of your lower lip, and "smoosh" your lips together to get that "just-ate-cherries" pout.
  • Do wear a bit of color on the cheeks with this, as it will liven up your face and prevent you from looking sallow.

Black Comet: Smoky Eye with Candy-pink Lips (MAC Lustreleaf and Lime Crime Great Pink Planet)

Black smoky eye with Lime Crime Great Pink Planet on the lips and Barry M Baby Pink Lip Paint worn as blush.

I had to name this the "comet" eye, because I was inspired by how a comet starts at a hard intense point, and then trails out to a smoky soft finish. This look is the reverse of most shaded eye looks, in that the hardest and darkest point is the inner corner of the eye rather, and then shades out and softens to another color at the outer ends.

Step 1: Using a flat, firm brush for precision, apply a matte black shadow to the inner 3/4 of the eye. With what remains on the brush, sweep along the outer 3/4 of the lower lash line as well.

Step 2: With a soft, shimmery silver-green (MAC Lustreleaf)extend the shape from the outer corner outwards in a winged shape, blending and smoking out.

Step 3: Return with the matte black using the flat brush, and extend the black outwards along the contour. Then gently smoke the line upwards under the brow bone to remove the harshness of the line.

Step 4: At the outermost ends, smoke the green and black together for a smoky wing. Then apply black mascara to finish.
---
For the cheeks and lips, I wanted to keep things colorful, so I dabbed Barry M Lip Paint in Baby Pink (100) onto the apples of my cheeks, and Lime Crime Great Pink Planet on the lips for a really bright candy-pink touch.

Lip Mix: Sunday Glow (Barry M Sunset Lip Paint + Barry M Peachy Pink Lip Paint)

Barry M Sunset Lip Paint + Barry M Peachy Pink Lip Paint, with matching nails
How's your weekend been? Mine has - like all weekends - been too short, and am not looking forward to Monday.

But to perk myself up for the next few days, I've painted my nails a bright peachy pink, and for dinner tonight, I've painted my lips to match.

Barry M 151 Sunset Lip Paint + Barry M 147 Peachy Pink = a bright, pastel peachy pink.
(If you think it's troublesome to reapply a mixture when you're out, let me assure you it's not rocket science. I just apply the paler peach-pink shade, then run the coral shade over it, both directly from the tube. No brushes, no fingers, nada. It takes me the same amount of time to touch up a single shade.)

For nails, I used something from the local drugstore's bargain bin, and it's un-numbered, so I think it would be more helpful for me to just tell you Barry M's Pink Flamingo Nail Paint would be a lovely alternative.

Barry M 52 Shocking Pink Lip Paint: Swatches and Review

Barry M Shocking Pink Lip Paint

This is the last of my Barry M Lip Paint features!

Shocking Pink is THE ultra-hot blue-pink in a matte, opaque texture. You've heard this is a dupe for Candy Yum Yum (which I did not purchase), but a little more pigmented and intense. Shocking Pink is also dryer in texture than Candy Yum Yum or NYX's matte lipsticks, so make sure you pat on some lip balm and then blot off any excess product before applying this.

Swatches (L-to-R): NYX Cancun Pink (black label), NYX Louisiana (round), Barry M Shocking Pink, NYX Shocking Pink (matte), Revlon Fuchsia (Colorburst) lipsticks

To better appreciate the brightness and "blue-ness" of the shade, I've swatched it next to a gamut of other "intense pinks". As you can see, NYX Cancun Pink does not even look bright compared to Barry M Shocking Pink. NYX Louisiana, which many consider a hot pink, looks very red beside its strong blue undertones. Revlon's Fuchsia is plummy in comparison, and NYX Shocking Pink looks almost mauve.

If you are afraid of very blue or very bright pinks, feel free to check out one of the other shades listed depending on what you feel more confident wearing.

The Pros?
I don't find any lip liner necessary as this matte lipstick has not bled. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find any matching lip liner more intense and pigmented than this anyway. It also applies evenly, lasts for hours without touch-ups, and is one of the most incredibly unapologetic pinks you will find in the market.

The Cons?
I don't like lipsticks staining, and this stains big time. But I experienced this with pretty much all hot pink lipsticks of this intensity. It's also not very moisturizing compared to other matte formulas like MAC Candy Yum Yum or NYX Shocking Pink. Then again, I have to say neither of those is this opaque and intense.

Compared to other Barry M shades in my collection?
I do find the texture of the 3 stronger lipsticks (SunsetVibrant Pink, and Shocking Pink) more even and high-quality than the lighter shades (Peachy Pink and Baby Pink) which take a bit more work to apply.

The differences between Shocking Pink and Vibrant Pink are in the undertones (Vibrant Pink is more of a true-pick, and Shocking Pink more blue-based) as well as texture (Vibrant Pink is creamier). If you are afraid of wearing something that is too cool-toned, or don't like a very matte texture, go for 62 Vibrant Pink.

Barry M Lip Paint 147 Peachy Pink: Review and Swatches!

Barry M Lip Paint 147 Peachy Pink

Barry M Peachy Pink Lip Paint is a lipstick that seems to have caused equal amounts of joy and disgruntlement among makeup aficionados. For one, it's one of the most beautiful peach-nude lip colors around. At the same time, it's one of the hardest to apply evenly due to the dry, slightly-cakey texture.

Swatches (L-to-R): Barry M Peachy Pink, Lime Crime Cosmopop, Revlon Soft Nude, NYX Orange Soda

For orange-nude lovers, Barry M Peachy Pink is a perfect salmon orange tone as compared to Lime Crime Cosmopop (true pastel orange) and NYX Orange Soda (pale beige-orange). It's easier to wear than either of the other 2, and has the opacity to really pop on the lips when applied heavily.

However (here's the kicker), getting it to apply evenly requires a number of conditions to be met first:

  1. Your lips must be in perfect condition; i.e. not flaky, patchy, rashed, etc.
  2. Your lip surface must be moisturized evenly.
That's because the lipstick is quite high in pigments, but a little lacking in emollients that will allow it to "slip" and adhere to lips in an even layer. The patchiness is often caused by the lipstick particles clinging to each other more than they do your lip surface.

TIP:
  • Applying a touch of lip balm (potted ones work a bit better than stick ones as they have a higher oil content) to your lips, rub it around to remove any loose flakes, and then kiss the back of your hand a couple of times so you are left with a thin, even layer.
  • Then apply Barry M Peachy Pink generously. Better to get it too opaque and then kiss the back of your hand to even it out and remove the extra product.

LIP MIX SUGGESTION: Add a touch of similar-toned gloss.

(From Top): Barry M Peachy Pink + Revlon Coral Reef Lipgloss = Pretty peach-stained lips.

Revlon's Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Coral Reef has very similar base tones as Barry M Peachy Pink, although it has less beige pigments. As the gloss tends to sink into lines on its own, wearing it with the Barry M Lip Paint evens both products out and gives you a creamy, opaque finish. Just don't overdo the lip gloss or you could end up with a mess.

Featured Lip Shade: Barry M Baby Pink Lip Paint Review and Swatch!

Barry M Baby Pink Lip Paint worn over NYX Dolly Pink Liner

To continue in my individual reviews of Barry M Lip Paints, the second shade I'm reviewing is 100  Baby Pink, the center lipstick below (click to go to the haul post). This is probably the hardest to work with of the bunch, partly due to the texture but mostly due to the shade.

Barry M Lip Paints with flash in (L-to-R): 151 Sunset, 147 Peachy Pink, 100 Baby Pink, 62 Vibrant Pink, 52 Shocking Pink

Barry M Baby Pink is a super-pale cotton-candy pink with a fair amount of white pigment. The texture is satiny with very low sheen, so your lips would need to be in perfect condition or it would highlight every flaw. It's also fairly opaque and quite matte.

I'm NC25, and on me it's already too pale on its own, but if you want that cool-toned doll-pink lip that girls get with lip colors like VIVA Glam Gaga and Saint Germain, but found they were not pale enough for you (i.e. NC15-NW20 and fairer) this lipstick would be absolutely perfect for you. It is very similar in tone to Sephora's Candid Candy pencil, if a little less nude-toned and more true pink, so if you like that, you would probably love this.

On anyone deeper than NC30 or deeper, it would probably look like you have white lipstick on, so I don't really recommend this for you. Get Lime Crime Great Pink Planet or NYX Strawberry Milk.

NYX Narcissus, Revlon Pink Pout, Barry M Baby Pink

From the swatches above, you can see just how pale Baby Pink is beside NYX Narcissus and Revlon Pink Pout. It gave me "Strawberry Chalk" lips more than Strawberry Milk. Without flash, the color is less "white" and quite true to the lip swatch at the top.

Some people consider this a dupe of Saint Germain by MAC, but I do beg to differ. Saint Germain is much closer to NYX Dolly Pink pencil, and is a slightly more intense blue-pink than Baby Pink by Barry M. It's also an opaque Amplified lipstick with a creamy texture. Baby Pink does not apply as thick because it's a physically "harder" lipstick than Saint Germain (not so much product comes off onto your lips in one swatch), which is no big deal as it still builds up to opaque coverage with about 2 layers or so.

The thing is that because it's so pale, those with very pigmented lips would need to touch up more, simply because any uneven coverage would be instantly visible. But I have to say it does stay even-looking a bit better than other super-pale lipsticks or glosses simply because it clings to the lip surface more.

TIPS:
  • In the image at the top, I applied Baby Pink over my favorite NYX's Dolly Pink pencil (cool baby-pink) to bring down the chalkiness a bit, and for a more lasting even finish. This way, when you drink, talk or press your lips together, your lip color stays even.
  • Apply a layer on the lips without going over your lip line, and rub it around with your finger to even it out.
  • I used it to increase opacity and as a mixer for other lip shades that I don't love too much. Example below is Barry M Baby Pink with Revlon Stormy Pink, a notoriously difficult lipstick to work with.

(L-to-R) Barry M Baby Pink, Revlon Stormy Pink, mixture of both.

BARRY M Lip Paint Haul and Swatches!

Barry M Lip Paints with flash in (L-to-R): 151 Sunset, 147 Peachy Pink, 100 Baby Pink, 62 Vibrant Pink, 52 Shocking Pink

Ahh... my beautiful babies have arrived from the UK. And the first thing I thought once I ripped off the plastic seals and uncapped these was, "Lime Crime!"

And it's no wonder, as the brand is known for strong colors. Barry Ms come in matte black plastic tubes partially reminiscent of Nars, but not quite as weighty or sturdy in the hands. On first sight in the tubes, I have to say 100 Baby Pink is gorgeous. And 62 Vibrant Pink looks even brighter than the ever-popular 52 Shocking Pink.

None of them had broken, but these lipsticks will smoosh against the sides on impact, so be careful with them if you hate that as much as me.

Pink-Peach Nudes

(L-to-R) Barry M 147 Peachy Pink, Lime Crime Cosmopop, MAC Creme Cup

In the tube, compared to the other Barry M shades, I'd immediately wanted to compared Peachy Pink with Lime Crime Cosmopop. But once swatched, the difference became apparent. Peachy Pink is a satin finish warm coral nude, and a good deal more matte than the other two swatched here.

It's warmer and a little easier to wear than Cosmopop, but it's still very nude on the lips. The Lime Crime is more visibly a milky orange due to the high white-pigment content. Creme Cup is similar in depth but more pink, although the swatches look a bit closer in real life, without flash.

I do have to say it's a very pretty peach-nude shade.

Corals

(L-to-R)  NYX Indie Flick, Barry M 151 Sunset, Revlon Kiss Me Coral , NYX Haute Melon

In real life, Barry M 151 Sunset is deeper in tone than NYX Haute Melon. While it has a lustre-finish, it is a good deal less "slippery" than the NYX, so you will get more even coverage and longer wear. I didn't think this lipstick would be opaque, compared to the other Barry Ms, but as you can see above, it is really intense even when swatched next to NYX's Indie Flick, and has a great lustrous texture without being all slippery and glossy.

Read a more detailed review here!
Baby Pinks
(L-to-R) Barry M 100 Baby Pink, Lime Crime Great Pink Planet, NYX Jupiter

Barry M 100 Baby Pink is pale, pale, pale. The texture was a bit dry initially, and I had to stroke it a few times to get the color going. But it is a beautiful cotton candy pink that can make you look like a Ganguro girl if you are not careful. I think it would look absolutely wicked on uber-pale girls though.

If you're tan, Lime Crime's Great Pink Planet would probably be a better opaque pink for you, as Baby Pink can look a bit chalky on anyone but the very pale. I'll report back after I've worn it on my lips! (Lips are sore and sensitive due to some allergies, so I'm not going to be swatching and removing matte lipsticks repeatedly.)

I also included NYX Jupiter in this swatch comparison as it has the same cotton-candy pink highlights, but its base-tone is a warmer sheer pink with a salmon tone.

 Hot Pinks:

Top (L-to-R) Barry M 62 Vibrant Pink, Lime Crime Countessa Fluorescent, MAC Pink Nouveau
Bottom (L-to-R) Barry M 52 Shocking Pink, NYX Shocking Pink (Matte), NYX  Cancun Pink (Black Label)

As usual, my addiction to super-hot pinks seems to have no end, and Barry M 52 Shocking Pink is the body-double to MAC's infamous Candy Yum Yum. It's even more of a dupe than NYX's matte lipstick of the same name; Shocking Pink.

As seen above (sorry for the slightly blurry shot), the NYX is a bit duskier and less opaque than the Barry M. In terms of finish, Barry M 52 Shocking Pink is fully matte, while NYX Shocking Pink is more of a satin. To their right, NYX Cancun Pink is a less opaque gloss finish, but is very similar to the other two in tone though the shadow may make it seem otherwise.

Barry M 62 Vibrant Pink was a bit of a surprise. The website swatches are terrible representations of the actual shades, and I was half expecting this to be a deeper pink. Not so. Shocking Pink is more blue and just a touch deeper. Vibrant Pink is a true hot-pink that leans neither towards red, nor blue.

It is also ever so slightly lighter in tone than Shocking Pink, and less of a true matte finish. I have to say Barry M Vibrant Pink is an almost identical dupe to Lime Crime Countessa Fluorescent aside from the finish (Countessa Fluorescent is like an Amplified lipstick and Vibrant Pink a satin), so if you can't get hold of Lime Crime or just don't like the price range, stick with Barry M.

P.S. MAC Pink Nouveau looks very subdued in comparison to these crazy pinks.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS

Barry M does make great color makeup, and I love that they have such unapologetic colors. I am not generally a loud and boisterous person (except with close friends or colleagues), so I tend to let my lipstick do the talking.

Barry M Lip Paints without flash, in (L-to-R): 151 Sunset, 147 Peachy Pink, 100 Baby Pink, 62 Vibrant Pink, 52 Shocking Pink

I say Barry M gives great value for the quality of its products, but do not expect to compare the textures to your favorite MAC, Nars or even Lime Crime lipsticks. They tend to be dryer than many of the other lipsticks I own, but they're not the driest around (yoohoo, Ruby Woo...). Still, if you have parched lips, I wouldn't recommend these. NYX round and black label lipsticks would be much better for you.

Similar to NYX, there is difference in consistency among products from the same range. I did not get any shimmers, only the cremes, and 4 out of 5 have a satin-to-matte finish, which I happen to like but you should take note of in case you don't.

Barry Ms are more expensive than NYX @ £4.49 each, though I bought mine for £3.74 per tube using a Summer promo code (SUMMER10). I do expect them to be more pigmented and intense, based on their brand caveat and the price difference.
So far, they have been.
